World Cup Live: India off to a brisk start

Put in to bat first, India opener Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag started aggressively against Bangladesh as they begin their 2011 cricket World Cup campaign on Saturday.

Live Scorecard

Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and decided to field against co-hosts India in the tournament-opener.

Title aspirants India will have revenge on their minds after minnows Bangladesh had ensured their early exit in the first round of the 2007 edition at the Caribbeans.

Dhoni and his men will be eager to settle the score and kick start their campaign on a positive note at the Shere Bangla National stadium.

Tipped as one of the favourites, the current world number two side, boasts off an exceptionally balanced team.

The explosive batting line-up will be marshalled by Sachin Tendulkar, who would be participating in his sixth World Cup this time around and the senior batsmen will look to give India a flying start with Virender Sehwag.

Gautam Gambhir will be next, while the middle-order also looks rock solid with Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj and Yusuf Pathan -- all capable of playing big-shots and also rotating the strike.

In their second and last warm-up game, India scored a mammoth 360 against New Zealand and it will give a lot of confidence to the batsmen, especially skipper Dhoni and Gambhir, who hit an unbeaten 108 and 89 respectively.

In the bowling department, Dhoni have picked three pacers and a spinner as India is going with a four-pronged attack.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have so far been content with an odd upset and have been generally looked upon as underachievers but the tigers look to shrug off that tag when they lock horns with India at home.

Though they have just five victories from 20 World Cup matches to show, Bangladesh has the distinction of beating Pakistan on debut during the 1999 edition and ousting India and defeating South Africa four years ago.

Skippered by Shakib-Al-Hasan, Bangladesh have a few good batsmen in the pint-sized dynamic opener Tamim Iqbal and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Besides, captain Shakib-Al-Hasan, himself, ranks number one in the ICC's all-rounders list and knows how to wield the willow.

Bangladesh won their first warm-up match against Canada but lost to Pakistan in the second tie. However, their openers Tamim and Imrul Kayes have got runs under their belt in the two matches.

Though their pace attack will lack the fire-power of speedster Mashrafe Mortaza, 21-year-old pacer Rubel Hossain had claimed five wickets in the warm-up matches.

Besides, Bangladesh also have some good tweakers in left-arm slow bowlers Shakib and Abdur Razzaq, who can get handy support from many other part-timers.

Teams:

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, S Sreesanth.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (C), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Naeem Islam, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam.

Umpires: Steve Davis (AUS) and Kumar Dharmasena (SRI)

TV umpire: Billy Doctrove (WIS)

Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI)

Pitch conditions: A hard wicket that is expected to help the slow bowlers in the later stages of the game. The team bowling second could find the ball difficult to grip if late evening dew arrives as predicted.

Cricket World Cup 2011 Top 5 Wicketkeeper Batsman !

An all-rounder role is always very important in the cricket. Not only the test matches but also in the shorter version of the game like T20 and ODI and not many teams have the luxury of having a all-rounder in their line-up.

When it comes to name all rounders , mind strikes the names of Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee, Ian Botham, Gary Sobers and great Jacques Kallis.   But we can’t ignore the names of Adam Gilchrist or Mark Boucher or Romesh Kaluwitharana. This is the pity, that no wicketkeeper batsman with exceptional batting talent make up the list of great all rounders.

So, lets checkout which team is going into the 2011 cricket world cup with the best available wicket-keeper batsman?
Here is the list of 5 top Wicketkeeper batsmen to watch out in action during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011:

5.  Brandon McCullum/Matt Prior – Their records are almost looking identical.  McCullum though have better reputation whereas Matt Prior is trying to fit in the role of batsman. His decent performance against the Australian side is a example of this.On the other hand Brandan McCullum is going through a rough patch, we still remember his batting during the 1st IPL season, and he too loves to bat on subcontinent wickets.

4. Brad Haddin – Young wicket keeper who got his chance after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist is making bowlers work hard for his wicket. Not so long ago he shifted to the role of opener and has some decent form before Cricket World Cup 2011. He can be dangerous as he got the ability to hit the ball a long way and play some unorthodox shots to make the front liners to think about their line and length while bowling.

3. AB DeVillers – He is the Successor of wicket keeper batsman Mark Boucher and fill in the shoes super fit!  We can compare him with any of the good batsman round and with powerful hitters. I have seen him hitting ball long way and changing the course of the game in few overs. Except keeping the wickets you can put this guy anywhere in the field and he is just brilliant in out fielding too. South Africa do have a lot of expectations from him, he could be the guy to help them win their first ever cricket world cup.

2. Kumar Sangakara – Sri Lankan skipper  Sangakara is a true star and his batting figures are consistent during his cricketing career till now.Though when he breaks through to the highest level his wicket keeping skills were under a lot of talks but as he got exposure and experience of international cricket he has done a really great job.Extra responsibility of captaincy may hurt a bit during the upcoming mega cricket event but we all hopeful to see him in his best.

1. MS Dohni – Indian cricket team found their long hair guy from Ranchi when a lot of experiments were going on with a lot of wicketkeepers to find a wicketkeeper batsman with decent batting ability. With his smashing starting ODI career helped him gain a permanent place in the Indian cricket side.Since then he has not looked back, his batting has improved over the period of time along with his wicket keeping skills. He took over the captaincy role and he delivered more than what selectors and Indian cricket fans would have demanded, today he is one of the most successful captain in Indian cricket history .

World Cup will reverse poor perception of 50-over cricket: ICC

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat believesnext month''s cricket World Cup will dismiss fears of thedemise of the 50-over format of the game and prove that allthree formats can co-exist.

Buzz up!
"I think the talk of poor interest in 50-over cricket isoverstated. I firmly believe that all three forms of the game(Test, ODI and T20I) will co-exist and in fact thrive atinternational level," Lorgat told Espnstar.com.

"I hope that the ICC Cricket World Cup, being the game''sflagship event and cricket''s biggest prize, will add toreversing the poor perception of 50-over cricket as some ofthe recent matches already have.

"To be frank, the talk of a demise of 50-over ODI cricketis way out of whack with what we are experiencing. Players, spectators, TV viewers and administrators still see greatvalue in the ODI and I think we are very fortunate as a sportto have three viable formats that are so popular in their ownways. I can''t think of any other sport that enjoys such anembarrassment of riches in that way," he added.

Lorgat said 2011 will witness the most open andunpredictable ICC Cricket World Cup in history.

"This year''s event promises to be one of the most openand unpredictable in history. It seems to me that the topteams are all playing some wonderful cricket at present andthere is precious little to decide between them," he said.

"The Australians could make history by becoming the firstteam to win four in a row but they will be challenged as theyare not as dominant today as they were four years ago. Theother teams no doubt will sense an opportunity to wrestle ''TheCup that Counts'' from their tight grasp," he added.

The ICC CEO said the governing body doesn''t have plans totinker with the format of the game but it is ready to considerchanges if it is good for cricket.

"There are no plans to dramatically change the format ofthe 50-over game at international level. That said, weencourage our Members to experiment with different formats andinitiatives to see if there are ways it can be enhanced," hesaid.

"The ODI today has a very different look and feel to whatit was 40 years ago when the first match took place in 1971.

We have always embraced change and will continue to do so. Ifit''s good for ODIs we will consider it," he added.

The World Cup, which is being co-hosted by India, SriLanka and Bangladesh, will be starting from February 19 inDhaka.
