Super Bowl XLV Logo Unveiled By NFL

The new standard logo for the American Super Bowl XLV was unveiled today by the NFL and there’s a buzz on Twitter and some design blogs about it, although not very many images. There has been a new logo every year for the Superbowl but starting with the 2011 Super Bowl, the logo will basically remain almost the same. The only difference is that the Roman numerals and the stadium backdrop and will change for every year thereafter.

Image From ESPN

The silver XLV logo features the Lombardi Trophy, Roman Numerals and the Cowboys Stadium.  Mark Waller, chief marketing officer for the NFL, said that this logo will be the permanent design for the Super Bowl, with each host city allowed to regionalize the logo. Waller said there will be a style guide for the logo which can be customized with the colors of the city.  If you’re not up to scratch with your roman numerals XLV is 45.

Last years logo, a big, brasher, bolder affair was designed by Attik and was designed to look like a football whizzing through the goal posts with the Roman Numeral XLIV sitting either side.

Below you can see the schematic Attik have released giving an overview of how their logo was built up.

Any thoughts on the new logo? How do you think the shiney silver look compares with last years colorful, more brash logo?

Fort Worth aims to be "super clean" for Super Bowl XLV

Fort Worth residents have a unique opportunity to participate in Super Bowl XLV.

No, your commitment won't earn you a ticket to the big game, but it'll sure give you bragging rights as the cleanest city to ever host the game.

Fort Worth is doing its part by building new roads and installing new pedestrian lights. Now it's your turn.

"We're asking these guys to pitch in and be part of the effort to make sure that when our visitors come here and when they see Fort Worth for the first time, they see a city that's inviting, that's clean," said city spokesman Bill Begley.

Super Clean 2011 is Fort Worth's newest campaign aimed at getting 20 groups to adopt a street, park, spot or median.

"It's no secret that we've had some challenges with the budget, so volunteerism is an important part of trying to make sure that we maintain the quality of life we enjoy here in Fort Worth," Begley said.

Individuals or groups who adopt are expected to pick up debris and clean their area at least once every three months. Begley said the clean-up effort includes all of Fort Worth.

"We want to put our best foot forward everywhere — not just downtown; not just the high-impact areas," he said.

As an added incentive, the city is giving away free trash bags for groups willing to clean up before February 6. Individuals, groups, corporations or non-profit agencies can enroll in Super Clean 2011

TABC Gets Proactive for Super Bowl 45

ARLINGTON, Texas - With a little more than a month to go before Super Bowl 45 in Arlington, local law enforcement agencies and business owners are preparing for the thousands of fans who will descend on North Texas.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission held a training session at Cowboys Stadium on Tuesday covering the prevention, deterrence and detection of alcohol violations.

“Any time we can be proactive and get on the front end of something it’s a whole lot better than being reactive and trying to clean up on the back end. And so we’re trying to be real proactive here both with our law enforcement community as well as our retailers,” said TABC’s Charlie Cloud.

But the TABC is focused on more than just booze.

Human trafficking is high on the agency's radar.  While many people think of the sex trade when human trafficking is mentioned, the bulk of the crime is labor-related.  Unsuspecting people, often foreigners, come to the United States legally on a work visa or similar arrangement.  Once stateside, they are forced into what amounts to indentured servitude.  (See video above)

"It's modern day slavery," said advocate Bill Bernstein.

He's one of a handful of those immersed in trying to stem the rising tide of human trafficking.  At Dallas' Mosaic Family Services, Bernstein and others have counseled more than 150 victims.

"Often, they don't see themselves as victims because they made the decision to enter into this arrangement," Bernstein notes.

But few realize that they have rights that protect them against forced work.

Spotting human trafficking is notoriously difficult.  Relatively few of the people being forced into abusive work conditions are completely isolated.  They walk among North Texans at grocery stores and in shopping malls.  Psychologically, though, they are hostage.  Along with law enforcement agencies local, state, and federal, Bernstein is part of a statewide task force hoping to crack down on human trafficking - especially at high profile events such as the Super Bowl.

The TABC session is one of several scheduled leading up to the big game on Feb. 6 and continues Wednesday.

Five Ravens Named to Pro Bowl 2011 Hopefully None Will Play

Five Ravens were voted to the Pro Bowl 2011 to be held January 30, 2011. Similar to last year’s format, the Pro Bowl will be played the week before the Super Bowl 2011 thus ruling out any player on both of the two Super Bowl teams. After a year in Miami, Florida, the Pro Bowl is returning to Honolulu, Hawaii. The Ravens selected to the Pro Bowl are ILB Ray Lewis, S Ed Reed, DT Haloti Ngata, K Billy Cundiff and LB Terrell Suggs (T-Sizzle).   Of the five, all but one (Billy Cundiff) have played in the Pro Bowl in previous seasons. In addition, four of the five will be starters with the only non starter beingTerrell Suggs.

LB Ray Lewis (12th Pro Bowl: Starter)

Although the age climbs, Ray Lewis’s quality of play has not missed a beat. Just a couple years ago, the Ravens fan base was dreading Ray Lewis’ impeding free agency. Many feared he would become the one to leave in a year that saw Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Bart Scott all become free agents. Many of the so called “analysts” claimed Ray Lewis to be too old or unable to keep up with the new generation of talent. Whether it was the best he could find or if his heart was with the Ravens Organization; in the end, Ray Lewis returned to Baltimore for his 14th season. Of Baltimore’s rich football history, only Johnny Unitas holds a statue out front of M&T Bank Stadium. You will get yours Ray.

Ray Lewis recorded a team-high 134 tackles through 15 games this season. In addition to his illustrious tackle total, Ray notched 2 sacks, 2 interceptions (One Returned for TD), 4 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Lewis is considered by many to be the leader of the NFL’s third ranked defense in points allowed per game (17.5).

Quotes on Pro Bowl Selection

“Wow, No. 12 feels like No. 1.”

“This never gets old.”

“I feel this is a team award."

S Ed Reed (7th Pro Bowl: Starter)

What can you not say about Ed Reed? The man is an animal and while missing the first six games on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Reed has still managed to record 37 tackles, 6 interceptions in just nine games. Reed leads the Ravens in interceptions and since his return on October 24, he is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with Patriot’s CB Devin McCourty.

DT Haloti Ngata (2nd Pro Bowl: Starter)

Ngata was selected to his second Pro Bowl in his five year career. Although impressive, his stats do not tell the entire story about Ngata’s impact each Sunday. Ray Lewis’s longevity can be attributed to Ngata’s dominance in the trenches as he commands numerous blockers each down thus freeing up Ray Lewis to freely roam the field.   As well as crashing the pocket he has been known to drop back into coverage and move with linebacker speed. The man’s athleticism is freakish and it’s about time the league began to take note. Although a contract year, I would expect Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens to pay up and keep Ngata a Raven. Ngata totaled 64 tackles and a career high 5.5 sacks. Ngata leads a defensive line that ranks fourth in the NFL in rush defense (94.2 ypg). In addition to his statistics, Ngata was responsible for shattering of Roethlisber’s nose on Monday Night Football this season. Fortunately for everyone, Big Ben was A Okay and just required a minor nose job.

K Billy Cundiff (1st Pro Bowl: Starter)

Billy Cundiff has been one of the most underrated Ravens in the 2010 campaign. Just over a year ago, the Ravens were losing close games due to poor kicking from the leg of newly signed Steve Hauschka. This did not bode well with the Ravens fan base that had grown accustom to the reliability of Matt Stover. In an uncharacteristic move from the Raven’s organization, the Ravens cut Hauschka and called Cundiff for a tryout. Cundiff secured the position and became the kicker for the rest of the season. He finished the 2009 season with a solid showing but had not fully convinced the Ravens that he was the guy for the job. Over the offseason, the Ravens brought in Shayne Graham to compete with Cundiff for the kicking job. Cundiff beat out Graham and never looked back. Cundiff recorded a league lead 38 touchbacks (4th all-time). Cundiff made 88.9% of his field goals (24-27) and all of his 38 PATs to produce a career-high 110 points.

Quotes

“I worked my butt off to prove to our coaches that they made the right choice, and hopefully, this gives them a little gratification.”

OLB Terrell Suggs (4th Pro Bowl)

Suggs recorded a team-high 11 sacks through 15 games, 15 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles.  Suggs has caught fire the second half of the season and has totaled 7.5 sacks in the last 8 games.

Quotes

“This is awesome.”

“I have to thank my teammates, especially the defense—and particularly Haloti Ngata for pushing me to do the little extra things when I didn’t want to."

Although an honor to have been named to the Pro Bowl, Ravens fans can all hope that these players will not be playing due to their impeding date with the Super Bowl. I am new to the site and this is my first article but I hope you enjoyed the read. I will be publishing a few articles a week so be ready for the next few. I welcome critique and other opinions so feel free to comment or ask questions.

Pro Bowl 2011 Coming in January 2011 in Hawaii

NFL fans are now focused on the final week of the National Football League (NFL) and after that we will witness the 2011 Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The venue was announce by the NFL and they also confirmed that the 2011 Pro Bowl will be televised live on January 30, Sunday via FOX at 7:00pm Eastern. A week after that the most awaited and anticipated Super Bowl XLV will happen and we are looking forward to a showdown possibly between New England Patriots and another strong NFL contender. will be held on February 6 at the Cowboys Stadium in North Texas.

It seems that NFL had decided to follow the game schedule last year when they also made the Pro Bowl precede the Super Bowl. During the 2010 Pro Bowl which had been telecast live via ESPN an average of 12.3 million viewers watched the games. It was the second largest viewership following the 2000 Pro Bowl which sets the record at 13.2 million. This also attracted the largest Pro Bowl attendance in 50 years at 70,697 and was held at Sun Life Stadium in South Florida.

PB11_hawaii-date_cmyk

“Playing the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl 2011 generated more excitement and interest in the event and also kicked off Super Bowl week in an innovative new way,” said FRANK SUPOVITZ, the NFL’s senior vice president of events. “We are pleased to return to the State of Hawaii, which has embraced the Pro Bowl for 30 years.”

The NFL Pro Bowl will be played in Hawaii once again next year as part of a two-year agreement between the NFL and the state of Hawaii. Ticket reservations for the pro Bowl 2011 is now available at various local and nationwide accredited ticket reservation agents. Be sure to reserve your tickets early because this will surely be one great football game.

“We are advising NFL fans to reserve tickets before hand and avoid the rush since the 2010-2011 season had been one of the best NFL seasons so far,” said one accredited NFL ticketing agency.

2011 Super Bowl Odds and Super Bowl 2011 Predictions

2011 Super Bowl Odds: Let’s start from the top by trimming the fat. You know you will not be seeing the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Seattle Seahawaks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this predictions list as they have less than one in 100 odds to take it. Then there is the New York Giants, who probably won’t look good in the odds until 2014.

Now the matchups. Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Green Bay Packers, if these two were to face off the odds are the Packers would take it. The Indianapolis Colts vs. the New Orleans Saints, obviously the Saints would take it again. The Baltimore Ravens vs. the New Orleans Saints, this matchup would look a lot like Week 15 and we are going to go with a similar result, the Ravens would take it.

The Chicago Bears vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers, this one would be very close but the Steelers have the edge. New York Jets vs. the Atlanta Falcons, this would be on the road for the Jets, and would probably be able to upset the Falcons, believe it or not. The Indianapolis Colts vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, the Colts would take it.

Now let’s get to the more likely to happen scenarios. There are one in six odds that the Chicago Bears will face the New England Patriots in the 2011 Super Bowl. Obviously the Patriots. Same odds for the Pats vs. the Green Bay Packers, the Packers lost in the regular season in Week 15 sans Aaron Rodgers, but if they face eachother in the Super Bowl we are likely to see different results: the Packers taking the crown.

The New Orleans Saints vs. the New England Patriots, Tom Brady wants it more, we’re giving this game, with one in four odds, to the Pats. Then there is the one in two odds that we will see the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Patriots, in which case Vick’s week of rest gives the Eagles the upper hand. Also with one in two odds are the Atlanta Falcons vs. the Patriots, and we say the Pat’s and potential MVP Tom Brady will take this one too.

NFL Pro Bowl 2011: Tony Gonzalez, Nnamdi Asomugha, DeSean Jackson Three Golden Bears Selected; Aaron Rodgers Snubbed?

Three California Golden Bears were called for the Pro Bowl. But conceivably the a lot of arresting Golden Bear in the NFL got overlooked.

Tony Gonzalez was called to the Pro Bowl for the twelfth time, besting Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys for the starting spot. It’s harder to amount out the chief factor–Davis absolutely was one of the toughest covers in the NFC.

Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders becoming his fourth beeline Pro Bowl anchorage admitting not acrimonious off a individual pass–that’s how acceptable he is. DeSean Jackson getting called for his additional beeline Pro Bowl isn’t abundant of a abruptness either; he’s been the primary ambition of Michael Vick for the Philadelphia Eagles, and his walkoff punt acknowledgment endure anniversary adjoin the Giants appealing abundant caked his atom as starting advanced receiver.

One big catechism remains: Where’s Aaron Rodgers? Behind Vick is apparently a given, but Drew Brees and Matt Ryan assault him out? Ryan has had some absorbing comebacks this seasons, but Rodgers has been bigger statistically in about every category. Same goes for Brees. It’s a amusing omission.

Of course, if one of those three quarterbacks end up in the Super Bowl, Rodgers will apparently get alternated in. On the added hand, I’m abiding Rodgers would adopt to play in Dallas rather than Honolulu.

Houston Texans 2011 Super Bowl Odds

The Houston Texans 2011 Super Bowl odds were at a very long 25/1.  This is a team that beat last year’s Super Bowl losers the Indianapolis Colts.  Is this a case of the Super Bowl curse setting in or are the Texans this year definitely for real?

It’s never too early to start thinking about Super Bowl odds, especially when the payout would be so lucrative shouldthe Texans pull it off.   This perennial .500 regular season finisher, which managed their first winning season last year at 9-7, certainly looked like Super Bowl 2011  contenders on Sunday against the Colts.

Arian Foster, who spent most of last season on the practice squad, ran for a team record 231 yards and scored three touchdowns to carry the Texans to a 34-24 victory over the defending AFC champions on Sunday.

"Coming into the league, you don't know what to expect, especially if you are not heralded and there's not a lot of publicity," Foster said. "You see guys like Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub and the way they carry themselves, and you try to mimic it and make your own personality. I feel privileged to be here."

Foster had the NFL's second-best opening weekend rushing performance since 1933.

“Needless to say, there is reason to be optimistic about the Houston Texans chances this season,” commented Don Shapiro of Gambling911.com.

The Texans will face the Redskins on the road in Week 2.  They have been made the -3 road favorite.

As Super Bowl approaches, Dallas cracks down on graffiti

With just 39 days to Super Bowl XLV in North Texas, the City of Dallas is literally turning up the pressure to try and clean up graffiti so thousands of visitors won't see it. Businesses are now pitching in to help, as police try a renewed effort to crack down on taggers.

The city is getting help from local businesses, like Stripco, that temporarily donated a blaster that uses not sand but something you could brush your teeth with: baking soda. “These little soda crystals hit the surface and they shatter and explode and they pop the paint off," said Bill Connelly of Stripco.

Sherwin Williams donated an anti-graffiti sealer and CPS, security surveillance cameras. It's all part of the city's recently-announced effort to wipe away and crack down on graffiti. “We are looking for those people that I would call a serial tagger. These guys that are constantly marking up portions of the city," said assistant Police Chief Tom Lawrence.

But for all the surfaces marred, police filed 25 cases against taggers this year, up from 20 last year. Catching and prosecuting them is hard. However, police say a tougher state law and better cooperation with the D.A. should result in more cases. Samuel Sales, who daily walks through his Oak Cliff neighborhood, hopes so. “It's going to help the neighborhood once you track down the people who are doing it," he said.

Looking clean for Super Bowl visitors is nice but will the effort fizzle after they're gone? City council member, Delia Jasso, claims it won't. “We are certainly looking at this as a long-term program," said Jasso. If it works, everyone will know by just looking around.

55 Dallas area Mayors Attend 2011 Super Bowl Council

The 2011 Super Bowl is turning into a unifying experience for North Texas mayors. At least 55 of them gathered Monday afternoon for the first meeting of the Super Bowl XLV Council of Mayors. Host committee officials said that such a council was a Super Bowl first and an important way to organize the region for the year's worth of events preceding the game. "Everyone in this room is going to have a piece of this Super Bowl," said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck.

The game will be played at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington, but ancillary events will be spread throughout Dallas, Tarrant, Collin and Denton counties. Bill Lively, president and CEO of the host committee, said the council already has 92 members looking to benefit from the region's first Super Bowl. Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs said that much of the country isn't familiar with his city. But he said the host committee and mayors' council would act as a conduit between Denton and all the opportunities that come with the Super Bowl.

Burroughs said he'd like to target specific groups, such as media support staff, and persuade them to stay in Denton during the Super Bowl. He said a commuter rail line will bring his city closer to the action by 2011. "I'll even take the refs," Burroughs joked to Lively. Monday's meeting was held at the Legends of the Game Museum at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Lively said the next one will probably be scheduled for September in the new Cowboys stadium.

The member mayors will get updates at least every two months and are expected to meet twice a year. Lively said the host committee will benefit by tapping into vast resources, such as thousands of potential volunteers needed for the Super Bowl. He said the committee would also work with the mayors to help organize events to attract some of the estimated 200,000 visitors that come to a Super Bowl. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert said this regional approach is crucial to a Super Bowl experience that surpasses all previous ones.

"We want to create such a compelling argument to the NFL that they have to come back to North Texas year after year after year," he said. Tony Fay, spokesman for the host committee, said a gathering like this is not common. He said that Dan Petty, president of the North Texas Commission, told him this is probably the largest group of local mayors assembled in decades. Some of the larger cities – Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington and Irving – already know they are home to major events or are hosting teams. But Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief said there are opportunities to spread the wealth.

2011 Super Bowl Odds: Colts and Saints Betting Favorites

The New Orleans Saints may have won Super Bowl XLIV but they are not the betting favorite in 2011 Super Bowl odds for next season. That honor goes to the Super Bowl runner-up Indianapolis Colts who are 7-1 at online sportsbooks. The Saints are the co-second choice at 9-1 with the San Diego Chargers. While there are three teams with single-digit NFL sports odds, there are some other contenders to win Super Bowl XLV including the New England Patriots who are well respected at 10-1. Two of the most popular teams every season in the NFL are the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers. They are each 12-1 in 2011 Super Bowl odds.

If a team has odds of 20-1 or less they are considered a betting contender. There are five teams that fit that criterion. The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers are 14-1; the Philadelphia Eagles are 16-1, while the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets are 20-1. The odds on the Vikings are going to rise or fall depending upon whether or not Brett Favre returns. If he comes back you can expect the Vikings to fall to single-digits. If he decides to retire then Minnesota would probably rise to 20-1 or more. Teams that are considered longshots are those that have odds greater than 20-1. Bet the Colts 7-1 as betting favorites in 2011 Super Bowl odds with a 10% bonus and 110% poker instant bonus.

There are some interesting teams in this group that might have a chance to surprise. The New York Giants could bounce back at 22-1 in 2011 Super Bowl odds. Cincinnati had a nice season in 2009 and they are 28-1. Atlanta and Tennessee have a lot of talent and they are 30-1. Chicago has a new offensive coordinator in Mike Martz and they are somewhat intriguing at 30-1. Houston has an excellent offense led by quarterback Matt Schaub and they are 32-1. The Arizona Cardinals would have been attractive but with Matt Leinart at quarterback they are not going to get much action at 35-1. Bet the Saints 9-1 as betting favorites in 2011 Super Bowl odds with a 10% bonus.

Carolina has a similar problem with no strong quarterback as they are also 35-1 in 2011 Super Bowl odds. Miami has an excellent head coach and could be worth a shot at 35-1. San Francisco and Seattle should not be discounted as they play in a weak division. The 49ers are 35-1 while the Seahawks are 60-1. Denver is not getting much respect at 50-1 while Jacksonville and Washington are not much better at 55-1. Real longshots include the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns at 90-1 and the Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs at 100-1.

NFL predictions for Super Bowl 2011

1. The Patriots will beat the Saints in Super Bowl XLV. Tom Brady and the New England offense have too many options to stop in their home stadium in the AFC playoffs. New Orleans has been a forgotten team for most of the year, but its hard-nosed road win over the Falcons in Week 16 showed why it is good enough to return to the big game. Drew Brees can handle the pressure of playing on the road in the postseason. The Patriots-Saints showdown will go down to the final possession with New England winning on a field goal.

2. With the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft, the Carolina Panthers select ... Andrew Luck of Stanford University. SI.com's Peter King reported this week that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh believes Luck is leaning toward returning to school instead of entering the draft, but the redshirt sophomore quarterback has to consider what remaining in college has meant for other signal-callers. In his own conference, Washington's Jake Locker, a projected early first-round pick last April, came back for his senior season and has seen his draft stock take a hit. Former USC quarterback Matt Leinart fell from being a possible No. 1 to No. 10 because he stayed. Meanwhile, Mark Sanchez left USC early and will be going to the playoffs for the second straight year. But if Luck does stay in school (the deadline for underclassmen to apply for the draft is Jan. 15), look for the Panthers to pick Clemson junior defensive end Da'Quan Bowers. In addition, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will go in the top 10 and start Week 1 of next season.

3. Labor peace will be reached by the April draft. Everyone is posturing now but no one wants a work stoppage, something the NFL has avoided since 1987. The owners are concerned about the impact of labor uncertainty on sponsors and season-ticket sales, and many players may not be heeding the union's advice to save money in case of a lockout. If the sides can just create more overall money, how they split it won't be as divisive an issue (players get about 60 percent of total revenue in the current CBA). More cash will be made available for veteran players by imposing a salary slotting system for rookies, and owners will generate more revenue by adding two regular-season games. They should be careful about making the rookie cap too restrictive, however, because the UFL could try to seize an opening to lure college talent.

4. The Colts will storm back next season. This has been a rough year for the Colts, who, assuming they even make the playoffs, will be underdogs to return to the Super Bowl. But the fact that Indianapolis has still been dangerous despite all of its injuries -- Peyton Manning looked like he was leading the Colts to victory over the Patriots in the final minutes at Foxboro on Nov. 21 -- tells you about this team's capability when healthy. Once Manning gets everyone back, the Colts will refocus and jump out to one of their typical blistering starts in '11.

5. These five also-rans in 2010 will make the playoffs in 2011.

• Cowboys: Dallas just needs discipline and leadership from the get-go. Interim coach Jason Garrett may not be the ideal coach to lead this team, but he's a lot better than Wade Phillips. Garrett should get the full-time job and help Dallas play up to its potential.

• Vikings: Minnesota has a number of unrestricted free agents -- including wide receiver Sidney Rice and linebacker Chad Greenway -- and must decide if it wants to keep interim coach Leslie Frazier. But the Vikings will have Adrian Peterson -- who is a free agent after the '11 season -- and Percy Harvin will become a star. All they have to do is bring in the right veteran quarterback, like they did two years ago with Brett Favre, and the offense will flourish again.

• Dolphins: After a 1-7 season at home, Miami should consider dismissing Tony Sparano and pursuing Bill Cowher. The Dolphins' defense is already solid and they have some playmakers on offense, but they need a quarterback. They should call the Eagles about Kevin Kolb in the offseason.

• Raiders: Their 5-0 record against the AFC West (with a Week 17 game pending against the Chiefs) is an encouraging sign, and they've drafted some good players in recent years. Now they just have to avoid doing anything stupid in the offseason, like firing Tom Cable even though he helped make them more competitive than they've been since 2002.

• Texans: They're everyone's breakout team each season and they always fail to deliver. Whether the Texans hire a new head coach or bring back Gary Kubiak with a revamped defensive staff, they have many of the ingredients needed to reach the playoffs for the first time. The season-ending injury to All-Pro linebacker DeMeco Ryans in Week 6 killed them this year, and they have to get better in the secondary -- they certainly can't get worse.

6. The Bears will drop off. Chicago, the NFC's likely No. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs, has a recent history of falling off after fantastic seasons. In 2001, the Bears were 13-3 and slipped to 4-12 the next season. They were 13-3 and reached the Super Bowl in '06, then regressed to 7-9 the following season. Their defensive core is getting older and they may not get as many lucky bounces in '11.

7. The Michael Vick Experience won't be quite as exciting. The Eagles presumably will give Vick the franchise tag or sign him to a long-term deal. At some point, they're going to get very serious about protecting their investment and be much stricter about limiting his downfield running. Coach Andy Reid has noted that defenses are throwing all sorts of looks at Vick already. Give defenses an offseason to plan and adjust their personnel, and you have to expect Vick to take a step back.

8. Brett Favre will take a TV job and officially retire for good ... but at least one team will reach out to him during the next year. Think about the lack of quality quarterbacks around the NFL right now -- at least 10 teams could be looking to start fresh at the position next season. Favre was terrible in his last month with the Jets in 2008, but the Vikings thought he had enough left to contribute and they were right. In a team meeting room somewhere, talent evaluators are going to pore over his footage from 2010 and at least think about calling old No. 4. Remember, Hall of Famer Warren Moon played until he was 44 and Favre is "only" 41. And even if teams don't consider him, the media will drum up something because Favre is good for business.

9. A playoff game will go into overtime and the new rule that requires both teams to have a possession will be a big hit. The main problem with the change now is inconsistency, because coaches have to change the way they approach overtime. The NFL will come up with the easy solution and put the rule in place for the 2011 regular season. The change will make for some long games and the networks won't be thrilled, but fans will be satisfied. Super Bowl 2011

10. Awards predictions for next season.

• MVP: Peyton Manning, QB, Colts. Manning will edge a series of other star QBs, including Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.

• Offensive Player of the Year: Manning. Anyone who has one player as Offensive Player of the Year and another offensive player at MVP is cheating.

• Defensive Player of the Year: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Lions. Suh is good enough to lift the whole defense in Detroit and should be a candidate for this honor every year moving forward.

• Offensive Rookie of the Year: LaMichael James, RB, Oregon. The one skill we know translates from college to the first year in the NFL is speed. James has plenty of that and will excel if he goes to a team that uses him properly -- provided, of course, that the redshirt sophomore declares for the draft.

• Defensive Rookie of the Year: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA. Ayers, a junior, could get picked late in the first round and thus join a team with a good defense like the Ravens or Jets. He'll instantly stand out for his ability to rush the passer and drop back in coverage.

• Coach of the Year: Jeff Fisher, team unknown. If he's not with the Titans and doesn't want to try out the broadcasting booth, Fisher will instantly instill toughness in a young team.

• Comeback Player of the Year: Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys. Dallas will play with a lot more discipline from Week 1 next season and Romo will return to Pro Bowl form. Randy Moss will re-sign with the Titans and give Romo a run for his money after Tennessee changes its offensive style.

Pro Bowl 2011 Second Annual Super Bowl Undercard

The Pro Bowl 2011 is trying a unique experiment again. The date of the Pro Bowl 2011 is a week before the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season. This strategy was Roger Goodell's best effort to make the all-star game relevant and shake up its formula. However, at least one part of it failed instantly, since it was held at the Super Bowl site in Miami, and not in Hawaii. Therefore, the Pro Bowl is returning to its usual home - but will the 2012 game then return to its usual date?

Pretty much every all-star game is deemed useless by the majority of fans. Although being named all-stars is a big honor for players, they don't usually go all out in actually playing the game, since it is ill-advised.

But the Pro Bowl 2011 is the NFL's second attempt to shake things up, by holding it two weeks earlier. This is the only all-star battle held at the end of a season, as it used to be just an anticlimactic epilogue to Super Bowl Sunday. However, they tried something different last year by putting it the week before the championship game.

That decision ensured that the Colts and Saints stars couldn't play, since they had the Super Bowl to get ready for. This year, leading vote-getters Michael Vick and Tom Brady won't be in action if the Eagles and Patriots win their conference titles. In any case, at least a few major icons won't have the chance to play, if they take their teams through January.

At the least, one controversial change has been taken out of the Pro Bowl. After holding last year's contest away from Hawaii, the NFL is returning there this season. Hosting it away from Honolulu was just a temporary experiment - like having it the week before the Super Bowl might be.

There is no word yet on when the 2012 exhibition will be held. Of course, there might not even be a need for one, if the worst fears about a lockout come true. But just in case there is a season next year, they'll need to revisit whether this strategy is a lasting success.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds to Win Super Bowl 2011

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds to Win Super Bowl 2011: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers [+10000 ML] will need some help in order to make it to the playoffs, when they take on the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

If the Buccaneers are able to defeat the Saints they will also need the help of the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants, as they will both need to lose. If the stars are aligned and the Buccaneers can pull it off they would earn their first postseason spot since 2008.

Tampa Bay has already surprised many this season, with young coach Raheem Morris and second-year quarterback Josh Freeman leading the NFL’s youngest team. Last season, Tampa Bay went 3-13 in their first season under Morris. The Bucs now find themselves in contention for one of the two NFC wild-card berths.

Freeman was able to keep his team alive after defeating the Seattle Seahawks 38-15 on Sunday. The 22-year-old threw for 237 yards and a career-best five touchdowns in last week’s game. Freeman had some help from Kellen Winslow and rookie Mike Williams who both caught a two touchdown receptions.

"He's clutch. He's a closer. He's a big-time quarterback, and he's developed into it right in front of our eyes," coach Raheem Morris.
The Seahawks played without quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and lost their seventh game out of their last nine.

But the Bucs next opponent will probably be ready to put up more of a fight. The defending champions have already clinched a playoff spot, but still have the chance to win the No. 1 seed in the NFC, with the help of the Falcons losing to the Panthers. The good news is that Tampa Bay have Freeman, who has a higher passer rating than that of Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

2011 Super Bowl XLV Tickets

Super Bowl is the up to date name, on the grounds that 1967, for the pro football championship contests, which extend back into antiquity, Roman antiquity to be precise. This will likely be Super Bowl XLIV, to honor those Roman roots of gladiatorial contests.

Super Bowl is the modern name, since 1967, for the professional football championship contests, which lengthen again into antiquity, Roman antiquity to be precise. This can be Super Bowl XLIV, to honor the ones Roman roots of gladiatorial contests.

This contest is among the conferences of the National Football League (NFL,) so named for the “League" the unit of measurement to precise the gap a Roman citizen may just walk in 1 hour. The modern game, however, is ready 4 instances that length of time.

The NFL is split neatly into 2 unequal halves, the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference), these are each further subdivided into Meetings, Get-Togethers, and One-On-Ones.

The Super Bowl is not going to involve the ICFL (Continental Indoor Footfall League) as it isn't a TLA (Three Letter Acronym). The winner of the Super Bowl can be declared the “world champions of football," of course ignoring different inhabited nations who may indicate that they name football “football," and they have got a championship concerning now not a bowl, but a cup. And involvement from teams from outer space are right out.

Where does the phrase “bowl" come from? Originally, it comes from the Rose Bowl, a faculty football contest, performed in Pasadena, CA which is finished in an elliptical stadium. Now a stadium is where foot races were held in historical Rome, but spectator gladiatorial contests like this were held in amphitheaters, like the Colosseum in Rome, or Flavian Amphitheater, so named from the traditional Greek phrase as a result of they were made up of two theaters joined together or theaters on both sides, but that may be extra historical historical past than most of the people can handle.

Half Time

Nominally named for being roughly in the midst of the game, or 2 quarters in, or 4 bits worth, or 50 cent, but now not the singer. Unlike many different football broadcasts, this part is in reality shown to the target market staring at from home. These festivities consist of top quality and second-rate musical performers, some who have questionable style in attire, others who have costuming clumsiness or “wardrobe malfunctions."

2 Minute Warning

Super Bowl, even as using a clock, does now not intend that that is to be understood as representing exact “wall clock" time, rather, it uses poetic license to represent an epochal length that could closing 30 minutes or an hour and a half, given overtimes.

Celebration

There is one explanation why for celebrating on the finish of Super Bowl, particularly for “football widows" or “football widowers" like me. It approach the end of the professional football season for the year… except some years the Pro Bowl occurs the following weekend.

Super Bowl Car Ads to battle for Attention in 2011

SuperBowl2011.jpg.250x250_q85 Car fans are in for a treat on Super Bowl XLV Sunday. Car commercials will dominate Super Bowl 2011. We have currently 8 Car brands listed as Super Bowl 2011 advertisers. What is more, according to AdAge several of the car makers have bought more than one 30 second spot. A whopping 50% of the Super Bowl car advertisers are German car makers.

German car brands are on a roll in the United States this year. They are breaking their sales records. Audi for instance is on track to exceed 100,000 cars sold for the first time. Apparently with a Super Bowl commercial, German car makers want to further drive that sales momentum. The difficulty for car makers at the upcoming Super Bowl will be to stand out.
Audi and Volkswagen had memorable Super Bowl ads last year with an elaborate social media campaign attached. It will be a difficult task for BMW and Mercedes to compete with them and the experience they collected. Mercedes already launched a social campaign for the Super Bowl XLV on Twitter that is supposed to generate a big following fueled by tweets to win a car. The promotion is called Mercedes Benz Tweet Race.
Audi and Volkswagen used humor in their Super Bowl ads last year. Humor is a great tool to stand out if the result is really funny. Audi's Green Police Anteater was indeed funny. I am really excited to see what BMW and Mercedes Benz come up with. I do not remember a single funny BMW ad. BMW is innovative in their ads as you can see in the Flash Projection BMW Cinema ad, but funny? Mercedes can be funny. They ran some very humorous Bluetec ads in Germany.

The Kia Super Bowl ad was also quite cool last year and the Hyundai Super Bowl ad was raising attention with Brett Favre. I expect again great ads from these two car brands. The Chrysler ad at the Super Bowl 2010 was not that great. Let's see if U.S. car makers have something up their sleeves against the foreign brands at the upcoming Super Bowl XLV in February 2011.

List of Super Bowl 2011 Car Advertisers:

    * Audi
    * BMW
    * Chrysler
    * GM
    * Hyundai
    * Kia
    * Mercedes-Benz
    * Volkswagen

CareerBuilder Super Bowl 2011 Ad brings back the Chimps

Job site CareerBuilder is expected to advertise again at the Super Bowl 2011, but there is no official confirmation. Animal right organization PETA is though already up in arms as they believe that CareerBuilder is producing a Super Bowl ad for 2011 that stars chimpanzees. CareerBuilder ran wacky ads with chimpanzees back in 2005 and 2006 and stopped after the public outcry got too big.

Hollywood star Anjelica Huston is leading the charge and asks CareerBuilder not to feature chimpanzees again. PETA says that chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry are physically abused and torn away from their mothers when they are babies. More details on PETA.

We will see how CareerBuilder will react and which kind of Super Bowl ad they will run at the end on February 6th, 2011. They definitely got some very early attention on their Super Bowl Ad.

2011 Pro Bowl Rosters Revealed; Tom Brady and Michael Vick Are Starting QB's

The 2011 Pro Bowl rosters are led by Tom Brady and Michael Vick. The 2011 Pro Bowl rosters were revealed on Thursday night, and the two leading vote getters were no surprise at all.
Barring injury, they will get the chance to start the 2011 Pro Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 30 in Honolulu. This is also barring either of them playing in the Super Bowl, because the Super Bowl will be taking place the week after the 2011 Pro Bowl.

The other quarterbacks selected to the 2011 Pro Bowl rosters were Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning in the AFC, and over in the NFC it was Matt Ryan and Drew Brees. It would be hard to argue against any of these players being selected, as they all had very successful seasons in 2010. Only Rivers looks to be out of the 2011 NFL Playoffs, so it is also a very fair representation of the playoff teams.

Some of the other offensive starters for the NFC are running back Michael Turner, fullback Ovie Mughelli, and wide receivers Roddy White and Calvin Johnson. They all put together great seasons, and it really shows how much the voters felt that Atlanta had achieved this year.

On the AFC offense, the other starters include running back Maurice Jones-Drew, fullback Vonta Leach, and wide receivers Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne. Johnson was the top vote getter when it came to the wide receivers, and he did indeed put together another one of his great NFL seasons.

In total, the Atlanta Falcons led the way with seven 2011 Pro Bowl players, and the New England Patriots followed them with the most in the AFC with six players. Many analysts have been saying that could be a possible Super Bowl match-up in February.

The 2011 Pro Bowl takes place on Sunday, Jan. 30 this year, with the Super Bowl being played out on the following Sunday.

Super Bowl XLV Predictions - It’s Patriots All The Way

We are now through 16 weeks and 15 games of the NFL regular season, which means that it’s just about that time to start making Super Bowl XLV Predictions. And really, what kind of prediction could we make without talking about the New England Patriots? Bill Belichick’s crew is now 13-2, and has wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Maybe even more impressively, they’ve been a favorite of bettors, going 8-3-1 against the spread in their last 12 games.

Of course, the real reason that the Patriots are part of our Super Bowl XLV Predictions is because of quarterback Tom Brady. If Brady hasn’t wrapped up the MVP trophy at this point in the year, he’s pretty darn close, as after a win in Buffalo on Sunday, he upped his season totals to 3,701 yards passing and 34 touchdowns, while being intercepted just four times. Meanwhile in the NFC, the team that we like in the Super Bowl XLV Predictions are the Atlanta Falcons who play host to the Saints Monday night. Like New England, the Falcons are 12-2 and a favorite of bettors, going 7-1 against the spread in the last eight games.

However, unlike New England, the Falcons get things done with balance on offense and defense. The Falcons rank fifth in the NFL in both scoring offense and scoring defense, scoring 26.4 points per game, while allowing just barely 18 a contest. So who are some underdogs that could come up big in the Super Bowl XLV Predictions? It’s got to be a pair of teams from Pennsylvania.

In Pittsburgh, the Steelers improved to 11-4 with a Thursday night win over Carolina, and are one of only two teams (along with the Eagles) to beat the mighty Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh once again has one of the most feared defenses in the National Football League, as they’re ranked No. 1 in scoring defense, giving up a meager 14.9 points per game.

On the other side of the Keystone State, the Eagles continue to pile up wins, as they march toward an NFC East title. The star of the show is none other than quarterback Michael Vick, who along with Brady is the top MVP candidate this season. In his most recent game against the Giants, Vick threw for 242 while rushing for another 130, and accounting for four total touchdowns. The Eagles will next play Tuesday night, after their Sunday game was postponed by an impending blizzard.

Finally, while they might not be part of the Super Bowl XLV Predictions right now, let’s give credit to the Bears, Ravens, Chiefs and Jets, all of which clinched playoff berths on Sunday afternoon. Who knows, maybe one of those teams will end up winning it all. When it comes to the Super Bowl XLV Predictions, crazier things have happened, right?

Super Bowl 2011 win worth $2M to Jets' Sanchez: report

Playing an extra playoff game could work out just fine financially for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. ESPN.com reports Sanchez will earn $250,000 in contract bonuses for each playoff win, with up to $1.875 million available if the Jets win the Super Bowl 2011.

Citing multiple sources, the report says, "The Jets will pay Sanchez $250,000 for each playoff victory, starting in the wild-card round. Therefore, if Sanchez leads the Jets to the Super Bowl and doesn't win it, he will make an additional $750,000 in postseason bonuses. "Sanchez would get the full, $1.875 million for winning the (Super Bowl) ..."

The Jets, with a late season-slump that included a loss to AFC East champion New England, must play a Wild-Card Round game, meaning it would take three victories to reach the Super Bowl. The Jets won two playoff games with Sanchez last season before losing to the Colts in the AFC Championship.

Sanchez injured his shoulder two games ago in a win at Pittsburgh before playing the enitre game in a loss at Chicago. He could be rested for all or part of the regular-season finale Sunday against the Bills at New Meadowlands Stadium.

2011 NFL Pro Bowl Rosters: Two Trojans, Two Bruins Highlight Squads

The 2011 Pro Bowl rosters have been announced this evening by the NFL, and the January 30 game in Honolulu, Hawaii will have a local flavor. Two former USC Trojans and two former UCLA Bruins made the Pro Bowl, which will be played the Sunday before the Super Bowl. Both former Trojans are on defense for the NFC, while both former Bruins are on offense for the AFC.

Maurice Jones-Drew of the Jacksonville Jaguars is the starting running back for the AFC, the second Pro Bowl of his career. In 14 games this season, Jones-Drew has 1,324 rushing yards and 317 receiving yards, averaging a career-high 117.2 yards from scrimmage per game this season. Drew's teammate, tight end Marcedes Lewis, has made his first Pro Bowl, backing up Antonio Gates of the Chargers. Lewis has caught 54 passes for 674 yards this season, with nine touchdowns. Jones-Drew and Lewis were teammates from 2003-2005 at UCLA, and have been teammates in Jacksonville for five seasons.

Former Trojan Troy Polamalu, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is the starting strong safety for the NFC, his sixth Pro Bowl in eight NFL seasons. Polamalu has six sacks, one interception, and 48 tackles this season. Another former Trojan, Clay Matthews, of the Green Bay Packers, is starting at outside linebacker for the NFC. It is the second Pro Bowl in as many seasons for Matthews, who has 12½ sacks and one interception this season.

Hyundai Unlocks Super Bowl XLV Drive With Sonata Hybrid Multi-Media Campaign

Hyundai will be among a parking lot filled with auto companies advertising on Fox during Super Bowl XLV. So to help get a fast start on the competition, the car maker will unveil the first TV spot in a planned national multi-media campaign for the Sonata, the brand's first hybrid model, on Dec. 31 during CBS's telecast of college football's Hyundai Sun Bowl.

Hyundai has purchased three 30-second spots on Fox during Super Bowl XLV on Feb, 6, 2011 from Cowboys Stadium. Thirty-second spots for the NFL's big game are going for $2.8-$3 million, per industry analysts. Fountain Valley. Calif.-based Hyundai Motor America's lead agency is its in-house Innocean Worldwide Americas division.

According to Hyundai, the first Sonata Hybrid spot, "Anachronistic City," acknowledges that although the Sonata is not the first hybrid to market, it is the "smart challenger of conventional, early generation hybrids a sophisticated evolution of the technology, wrapped in a more appealing package."

The 30-second spot showcases a variety of inventions that were all innovative in their time, including 1880s-era high wheel bicycles, mid-century typewriters, a blimp, 1980s-era cell phones, a "portable" record turn-table, black-and-white TVs, silent movies a folding camera and even "jiggle belt" exercise machines. The Sonata then appears as the spot makes a point about how all technology evolves.

"Hybrid Sonata capitalizes on the learnings of hybrid models that have come before it, and advances the technology so that it's practical and affordable for a broader consumer audience – not just early adopters," John Krafcik, president and CEO, for Hyundai Motor America, said in a statement. "Like the 2.4-liter direct-injected Sonata and the 2.0-liter Sonata Turbo launched earlier this year, Sonata Hybrid demonstrates Hyundai's unique approach melding innovative technologies and emotional design into products more and more people want to put in their driveways."

Hyundai's title sponsorship of the Sun Bowl, being played in El Paso, Texas, includes eight  30-second spots. In addition to the Hybrid Sonata debut ad, Hyundai said it would include TV spots featuring the two other Sonata powertrains: the standard 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection model and the 2.0-liter turbo model. Hyundai's holiday campaign will continue on the Hyundai Sun Bowl featuring music from singing duo Pomplamoose.

Baltimore's Jim O'Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining to give the Colts the victory. Colts linebacker Mike Curtis set up the winning field goal with an interception that deflected off the hands of Cowboys running back Dan Reeves. Baltimore's first touchdown also came after a deflection, on a 75-yard pass play from Johnny Unitas to John Mackey. The pass bounced off Colt Ed Hinton's fingertips and then off Cowboys defensive back Mel Renfro's fingers near midfield.

Notable

O'Brien had missed one field goal earlier in the game and had had a point-after attempt blocked.

The Colts won despite committing seven turnovers -- four fumbles and three interceptions. The Cowboys had four turnovers, including three interceptions thrown by Craig Morton.

Unitas was 3 of 9 passing before being injured in the first half. Earl Morrall, his replacement, was 7 for 15 for 145 yards.

Cowboys defensive end Chuck Howley became the first non-quarterback to be selected MVP. He remains the only MVP from a losing team.

Saints Top Falcons to Claim Playoff Spot

For defending Super Bowl champions, it is rarely as easy as lather, rinse and repeat. Securing a return engagement at the title game is among sports’ most daunting challenges. The New Orleans Saints (11-4) earned the opportunity under fire Monday night, downing the Atlanta Falcons by 17-14 in the charged atmosphere of the Georgia Dome.

The win gets New Orleans through the playoff turnstile, assuring them at minimum a wild-card berth. The Saints, who host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season finale, can still win the N.F.C. South, but it is not likely. Atlanta (12-3) would have to stumble at home against lowly Carolina.

The Falcons, driven to show skeptics that their status as the pending top N.F.C. seed is no fluke, led by 14-10 well into the fourth quarter. After a punt, the gulf between the line of scrimmage and a New Orleans victory was 90 yards. But quarterback Drew Brees shook off a dreadful start to the period and whipped his squad to the winning score, a 6-yard pass to Jimmy Graham with three and a half minutes left. The teams flipped the anticipated script on a clash of forceful offenses — New Orleans’s quick strike, Atlanta’s ball control — with a collaborative defensive tour de force.

The teams’ six combined punts in the first quarter nearly matched their rushing total, 7 yards. Then a pair of Falcons interceptions, neither by a defensive back, in the fourth period temporarily turned the game in their favor. Brees tossed a high-risk pass with the Falcons’ Jonathan Babineaux wrapped around him. Defensive end Chauncey Davis picked it off and lumbered 26 yards to lift Atlanta in front, 14-10. In no time, Brees found Marques Colston in the end zone for an apparent go-ahead score, but a penalty wiped it out. On the next play, Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon deflected a Brees pass and plucked it out of midair to stave off the threat.

The Falcons’ defense thought it had induced yet another turnover, pouncing on a fumble with just over two minutes left. But a replay rightly reversed the call. The Saints-Falcons rivalry is one of the N.F.L.’s least appreciated, partly because of its provincial nature and a sorry legacy of insignificant games. The league’s two most deeply Southern cities broke in their teams a year apart in the mid-1960s. During decades of mostly inept seasons — until the Saints’ Super Bowl run last year, the franchises had combined for only eight playoff wins — the twice-annual games were highlighted on fans’ schedules.

The animus was altered when Hurricane Katrina sent thousands of New Orleans residents to the Atlanta area, where many resettled for good. Some switched, or at least split, their allegiances, while others stayed loud and proud. Atlanta inadvertently did its part to help restore New Orleans, losing to the Saints in the first post-Katrina game at the Superdome four seasons ago. The rivalry, if changed, remains intense, and Falcons wide receiver Roddy White fanned the flames last week with the thoroughly modern version of athletics trash talk: posting on Twitter. Though White also posted an apology on Twitter, he was often at the center of chippy play early Monday.

Late in the first half, White helped Atlanta cut the deficit to 10-7 on a 7-yard scoring catch, the 3-point margin being a 52-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley. Hartley almost lost his job by misfiring from about half that distance in overtime of a loss to Atlanta in September, the low point of the Saints’ bumpy 4-3 start. The Saints promptly added the veteran John Carney to the roster, which scared Harley straight, and he returned to good graces a few weeks later.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, 19-1 as a starter at home before Monday, could not rescue his team. Atlanta fans, many of them unwilling to let go of the Michael Vick era by wearing his old No. 7 jersey to games, now prefer Ryan’s No. 2 as their fashion statement. But the player known as Matty Ice never warmed up, and the Saints have a chance to repeat.

Dallas Cowboys: Dallas Fans Have Seen It All This Season

Dallas Cowboys fans have had a rough season. They have seen it all. Their team started the season as the favorites to win it all. That came as tremendous news seeing as how the Super Bowl would be played in their own back yard.

The team then started the season at 1-8. The horrendous start lead to the firing of their head coach Wade Phillips. They have also suffered through injuries. The most painful of which was that to starting quarterback Tony Romo.

They then saw interim coach Jason Garrett and aged QB Jon Kitna turn the season around. The Cowboys have gone 4-3 in the last seven games. While, mediocre, the Dallas fans will take any positive they can. This past weekend was no different. The Cowboys dropped a heart breaker to the Arizona Cardinals. But the story was the play of third string youngster Stephen McGee.

The second year QB grew up idolizing the Cowboys. He then went to Texas A&M, followed by a backup role in Dallas. He never thought he would get the nod. But after Kitna went down with a hip injury, it became necessary. Seeing the youngster take the field lead any NFL fan to smirk. That is all Cowboys fans can do this season, sit back and laugh.

Exercise may help limit pregnancy weight gain

Being physically active while pregnant may help women gain a little bit less weight, according to a new review of recent research.  Pooling the results of 12 studies, researchers in Munich, Germany, found that women who exercised while pregnant gained an average of 1.3 fewer pounds than women who didn't.

That alone is probably not much of an incentive for women who are considering exercising while pregnant, but there are other reasons to do it, said Dr. Michael Kramer of McGill University in Montreal who reviewed the findings for Reuters Health. Research shows that exercise can have positive effects on mood and insulin sensitivity in people overall, and appears to have no negative effects on women during pregnancy, noted Kramer, who is also scientific director of the Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Exercise can also help women maintain their pre-pregnancy conditioning.

"Women who have been physically active can continue, and women who haven't can start," Kramer said. "But they shouldn't expect major outcomes for them or their baby." Women who gain too much weight in pregnancy are at risk of a number of problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and labor complications. A recent study also found that women who gained more weight during pregnancy gave birth to heavier babies, who in turn are themselves more likely to become obese adults. They also may be more prone to cancer, allergies, and asthma.

To investigate if exercise programs help women avoid the trouble that comes from too much weight gain, Ina Streuling of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich and colleagues reviewed data from 12 studies that looked at the effect of an exercise intervention on women during pregnancy.

Collectively, the studies compared more than 1,000 women, some of whom were randomly assigned to follow an exercise program. The programs encouraged women to exercise approximately three times per week, up to one hour of aerobics, running, biking or muscle strengthening, starting in the first or second trimester. The studies did not uniformly show that exercise was associated with less weight gain in pregnancy, but overall, the data trend in that direction, said Kramer, who was not involved in the research review.

And some women lost more than the average of 1.3 pounds, Streuling told Reuters Health -- specifically, women who were overweight or obese before pregnancy. "To prevent high (weight gain), pregnant women should be physically active," Streuling noted in an e-mail to Reuters Health. They performed another analysis that included studies that combined physical activity and dietary counseling, and found women who followed this program gained almost three pounds less while pregnant. Kramer co-authored a recent study that also reviewed previous research about the effect of exercise on pregnancy. That study "essentially found the same thing," but the results were too weak to rule out whether the trend could have been due to random chance, not a true effect of exercise on pregnancy, Kramer noted.

It's not hugely surprising that exercise alone would have only a small impact on weight gain in pregnancy, he explained -- what really matters is not only how much women work out, but also how much they eat. "If you do a lot of exercise, you're going to get hungrier. So unless you cut down on what you eat, you're not going to lose weight." In addition, not all of the included studies were of high quality, Streuling noted, and some women not assigned to the exercise program may have been overall more active in their daily lives, which may also help explain why exercise appeared to have little effect on weight in pregnancy. Even if exercise is generally safe in pregnancy, extreme contact sports and other intense exercise such as marathons and the Iron Man are probably not a good idea, added Kramer.
